How I managed to design a system that supports waste management operations for a large part of the country. [UX/Research/User Stories/UI]

The project aimed to maximize process automation in waste management, driving significant cost savings and operational efficiency.

An integrated web platform was built to centralize operations and connect seamlessly with accounting systems, while a mobile app enabled field teams to execute tasks, report in real time, and communicate directly with management - improving transparency, speed, and decision-making. MAIN GOALS OF THE PROJECT The project aimed to maximize process automation in waste management, driving significant cost savings and operational efficiency.

LO/MEDIUM-FI WIREFRAMES/WIREFLOWS *Although presented as lo-fi wireframes, the project’s specificity required a medium-fi level of detail to ensure precise alignment with requirements.

OBJECTIVES & GOALS Design and deliver a functional, intuitive web-based platform enabling efficient management of multiple companies and supervisory units within the waste management sector - covering waste collection, processing, trading, and recycling - with seamless integration into existing accounting systems to ensure operational and financial coherence. Develop a mobile application enabling waste collection and facility operations teams - including garbage truck drivers and staff working in halls, warehouses, and waste storage facilities - to execute daily tasks, report activities in real time, and streamline communication between operational sites and central management.

CHALLENGES - Designing a system that supports two companies with different operational methodologies within a single environment, - Ensuring scalability and flexibility to handle future business scenarios and corner cases, - Adapting the design to technology constraints of the Quasar framework on Vue.js, - Rapidly gathering comprehensive stakeholder input in collaboration with a business analyst. Post Designs Outcome My key takeaways 1. It is always important to understand who your target audience is 2. How time consuming the wireframing process is 3. Collaboration with multiple departments is crucial for projects of this complexity 4. Observing users in their own environment is an especially valuable experience 5.
